This illustrated book combines diary extracts with broader discussion of crofting, land use and sustainability, recording David and Izzy’s early experiences as new entrants to crofting on a small croft in rural Lewis.
The diary entries give an immediate account of day-to-day crofting life, including the practical challenges of establishing a sustainable enterprise. At the same time, David and Izzy approach their work with respect for the township’s long heritage and traditions, seeking to learn from the past while exploring new ways of using the land.
Reflective sections consider the financial realities of crofting and its wider contribution to rural development, biodiversity, local food production and climate change. The result is a thoughtful and honest account of modern crofting, written from the perspective of those trying to build a viable future on the land.
