The cleared settlement of Sròmos

On Saturday 26th April at 11.00am John Randall will give a talk about the cleared settlement of Sròmos at the Community Hub, Balallan.

A rare opportunity to learn about the cleared settlement of Sròmos (pronounced like ‘Straw-mos’) located about a mile east of the upper reaches of Loch Seaforth. It was part of the tack of Sìophòrt (Seaforth) in 1780 and seems to have been completely cleared as part of the expansion of the Pairc Sheep Farm around 1820 or 1830.

Unlike most of the small settlements along Loch Seaforth and southern Pairc, Sròmos is located a short distance away from the coast on relatively flat land that is quite suitable for cultivation. While its population appears never to have been large, the ruins of a corn kiln together with houses and field boundaries still visible today suggest that it must have had a reasonable quantity of arable land. It is described in evidence to the 1892 ‘Brand Commission’ as ‘the prettiest township in the whole place’ (Pairc), an area which could be made into large crofts.

The Pairc Deer Raiders spend the first night of their famous expedition at the site of the village.

Light refreshments will be provided at the talk. Afterwards any who wish, can walk together from Seaforth-head to to the site of the settlement. The walk is approx. 5 miles each way over rough terrain. Bring stout shoes and a packed lunch.
