New publication now available – Fifty Golden Years Serving Our Monarchy in the Western Isles

We are pleased to be able to offer this important new publication, published by the Western Isles Lieutenancy to mark its 50th anniversary. The book brings together a rich record of key events, people, and communities that have shaped the work of the Lieutenancy across the Islands over the past half century.

With 112 pages in A4 format and over 170 photographs and Order of Service covers, the book provides a substantial historical account of the Lieutenancy’s role in public life. It reflects the strong tradition of volunteering and community engagement in the Western Isles, and highlights the many ways local individuals and organisations have engaged with the Monarchy through Royal visits, honours and awards, national celebrations, Armed and Cadet Forces links, and community events.

The publication includes a foreword from the current Lord-Lieutenant, Iain Macaulay, an anniversary message from Councillor Kenneth Macleod, Convener of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, and personal reflections from former Lord-Lieutenants. The foreword and contents list are presented in both Gaelic and English, reflecting the bilingual character of the Islands.

This is the first publication of its kind in Scotland to document the history of a single Lieutenancy area, and will be of interest to anyone with a connection to the Western Isles, its communities, and their shared civic life.
